[Unknown] Dillingham
Born: About 1380
This unknown Dillingham exists solely to tie Thomas and William together. He was probably born circa 1380, during the reign of Richard II. He presumably knew of the Wars of the Roses, although it has been said that few commoners were affected. Henry of Bolingbroke deposed Richard II in 1399. The House of Lancaster survived in Henry IV, V and VI until 1461. It was during the reign of Edward III (r.1327-1377) that surnames were required of Englishmen, so this man’s father may have been the first Dillingham.
1. John Dillingham (Dylyngham) was born about 1495 in England. He died in 1540 in England. He married Joan Olyff. She was the daughter of Richard Olyff, an Oundle mercer.
They had a son, William. See below.
The following was obtained from the Internet, May, 2009:
http://us.share.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/8882/Notes/00096.htm
“It is not yet known what the relationship was between John and two earliest named Dillinghams in Dean: Thomas (1448) and William (1452). John Dillingham is first mentioned in Dean records in 1521, and from the available evidence he was probably born ca 1495, which suggests a gap of two generations making him a possible grandson of either Thomas or William. It is likely that they were sons of Thomas Dylyngham, mentioned in 1448 in a land grant relating to land grants in Bolnhurst, Pertenhall, Keysoe and Dean. [Speculations by ED] There is evidence that John’s wife Joan was the daughter of an Oundle mercer, Richard Olyff, as a legacy from Olyff was the subject of a dispute. ... When John Dillingham, yeoman, prepared his last will and testament (being whole in mind and sick in body) on the 19th August 1540, he made bequests to his eight sons, Thomas, William, John, Henry, Walter, Robert, Richard and Humphrey, and daughter Alice, in addition to "the child that my wife is great with". All ten of the children survived to maturity, including Agnes, and sons John, William and Thomas had already produced male heirs. Dillingham Family Genealogical Exchange Bulletin, Vol IX, page 8ff. John was contemporaneous with Henry VIII (b.1491).”
“The name Dylyngham (sic) first appears in the surviving Dean records in the year 1448, when a Thomas Dylyngham is mentioned in a land grant relating to lands in Bolnhurst, Pertenhall, Keysoe, and Dean. There is no proof that this was the grandfather of John Dillingham. Winthrop Alexander pg 3 "The earliest record of a Dillingham was found in the list of ‘intrantes’, or persons admitted as inhabitants, in Canterbury, when John Dillyngham, tailor, at Westgate in 1433 and 1434, paid an annual fine or license of four pence. The earliest connected records which enable us to establish anything like a pedigree are found in Bedfordshire in the latter part of the sixteenth century. The family then appears in the Parish of Deane, in the northeastern extremity of that county, and evidently must have been located there for many years, being landowners and people of prominence."
2. William Dillingham was born about 1540 in Deane, Co. Bedford, England. He was buried February 24, 1603 in Cottesbach, Co. Leicestershire, England. He married __________ about 1565 in Deane, Co. Bedfordshire, England. They had a son, Henry. See below.
“From IGI data, William Dillingham is given as the father of several brothers, including The Reverend Henry Dillingham, Rector of Cotesbach. 1527 is a guess, based on the known birth date of Henry and on the death of his father who had eight sons, a daughter and a wife great with child at his death in 1540. It makes William seven years older than Edward VI, son of Henry VIII. Edward appears as a son of William in IGI records, but his existence is doubtful. William Jr. more so. From the Visitation of the County of Leicester in 1619 by William Camden, Clarenceux King of Arms, on page 101, is given a pedigree of Marston: Katherina Marston, daughter of Johannes Marston and Maria Turuile, uxor W’mi Dillingham rectoris Eccl’iae de Canfield in Com’ Northamp. This may be not be our ancestor, since William was so common a name among cousins in those years. Dates are not given in the pedigree. There is apparently a further page of the Marston pedigree which I failed to copy, which might improve the dating. At least we know that Katherina’s older half brother Willm’s Marston de Slawton had children by 1619, and possibly even grandchildren. The commonality of trade between this William and our Henry, known to be the son of William, suggests that we have found here the mother of the Reverend Henry. In the same document, on page 195, we find Katherina daughter of Henry Dillingham de Deane in Com’ Leicester. She marries William Allen de Burrow and starts having children in 1619. She might well be a sister of Edward the immigrant. Her name would suggest that she is Katherina Marston's granddaughter. [Marriage was 1 Jan 1616 in Dean]
Correspondence from Margaret Haile, author of "Dillinghams of Big Ivy, Buncombe County, N.C." 16 June 1992: "You also mentioned William Dillingham of Cotesbach, Leicestershire as possible father of Rev. Henry. Volume 1 of the bulletin contains extracts from the will of William, which appears to prove the relationship." William's children John, Harry and Margaret are identified in the will of their grandmother. The attachment of William Jr is entirely speculative. His death on 24 Feb 1603 was obtained from Tim Cole, 74461,322 in a Compuserve Genealogy Forum communication on 4 June 1994. According to Winthrop Alexander (page 12) he was a husbandman of Corresbach, and Leicestershire, and owned land in Bitteswell. He was a native of Deane in Bedfordshire, and a brother of Walter and Thomas of that place. His wife is unknown.”
