2nd Foot (Queen's Royal)

The Battle of Ghuznee was fought on 23 July 1839 as part of the 1st Afghan War. The following regiments,
4th Hussars (Light Dragoons in 1839),
16th Lancers,
Queen’s or 2nd Foot,
Somerset Light Infantry (13th Foot) and the
17th (or Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot,
of the British Army were present at this action, as well as the 1st European Regiment of the Bengal Presidential Army. They formed part of what was known as the Army of the Indus. It should be borne in mind that although ‘County’ titles were given to British infantry regiments in 1782, due to the peripatetic nature of these forces, there was no real connection between regiments and counties until the Cardwell reforms of the 1870s. It should also be pointed out that the designation of various cavalry regiments has changed markedly over time.
