[Abstract of Newspaper Article]
George joined the Navy at age 15 an was on the Flagship Waterloo at Sheerness. When the Russian War broke out, he was drafted onto a paddle-wheel wooden steamer "Porcupine", five guns and served in the Baltic during the bombardement of the upper part of the Gulf of Finland.
The "Porcupine" assisted in laying Atlantic Cable from Valencia Bay in Ireland, to Trinity Bay in Newfoundland. The "Agammemnon" and "The Lizard" carried half, and "The Niagara" and "Porcupine" carried the remaining cable.
Apparently Queen Victoria put through the only message on this cable congratulating the fleet on the successful accomplishment. However, there was a problem, and the cable had to be taken up and relaid.
Prior to leaving home, George Maryott's father had a livery stable in Dover, and when the first cable was laid between Dover and Calais, he was awarded the contract for carrying telegraphed messaged from cable station on the coast to township, a distance of about 3 miles. George and 2 young companions delivered these messages by ponies until the wire was run from coast to township.
After many experiences on high seas and carrying tea on Clippers from China and India to London, George sailed to Australia on "Queen of England" as an able seaman in 1861. The ship was wrecked at Nobby's Newcastle, NSW. Repairs were carried out at Cockatoo Dock, where convicts were held. Captain Nolan asked George to rejoin, but he decided to remain in Australia.

Sailors and marines awarded the Baltic Medal (1854-1857)
During the Crimean War, a British and French fleet entered the Baltic, and captured Bomarsund harbour and one of the Aland Islands (now part of Finland). Bomarsund is the sound between the islands and the Swedish island of Vardo; and at the fine harbour on Bomarsund, dominating the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia, and indirectly that of the Gulf of Finland, the Russians had constructed a northern naval base, and this was destroyed in the attack. The British fleet taking part in the Baltic expedition comprised Her Majesty's ships Aeolus, Ajax, Alban, Algiers, Amphion, Archer, Arrogant, Basilisk, Belleisle, Blenheim, Boscawen, Bulldog, Caesar, Calcutta, Centaur, Colossus, Conflict, Cornwallis, Cossack, Cressy, Cruizer, Cuckoo, Cumberland, Dauntless, Desperate, Dragon, Driver, Duke of Wellington, Edinburgh, Esk, Euryalus, Exmouth, Falcon, Firefly, Geyser, Gladiator, Gorgon, Hannibal, Harrier, Hastings, Hawke, Hecla, Hogue, Imperieuse, James Watt, Leopard, Lightning, Locust, Magicienne, Majestic, Merlin, Miranda, Monarch, Neptune, Nile, Odin, Orion, Otter, Pembroke, Penelope, Pigmy, Porcupine, Prince Regent, Princess Royal, Pylades, Resistance, Retribution, Rhadamanthus, Rosamond, Royal George, Royal William, Russell, St George, St Jean D'Acre, St Vincent, Sphinx, Stromboli, Tartar, Termagant, Tribune, Tyne, Valorous, Volage, Volcano, Vulture, Wrangler and Zephyr. This is the medal roll of the naval and marine claimants who qualified for the Baltic Medal for service in 1854 to 1855. The medals were dispatched in batches from early 1857, the first batch being numbered B A 1, the next B A 2, &c.; then follows the destination (a place or, more usually, a ship) and the date of dispatch. Most of the medals had been sent by the end of 1857.

Search of Australian Newspapers (NLA - Brisbane Courier dated 1892-6-13; The Courier (Brisbane) dated 1862-05-02 and The Argus (Melbourne) dated 1862-05-07) on 2009-07-24.
The Queen of England was a vessel of 1200 tons under the command of Captain Norman from Melbourne [...possibly a coastal steamer...], which ran aground about 5am between Nobby's Head and old Lighthouse Hill on what is better known as Big Bend - numerous rocks running out in a south-easterly position from Nobby's. The rising tide refloated the Queen of England but it was found that she was taking on water. She was eventually beached to repair the hull enough to allow her to make way to Cockatoo Docks in Sydney for repair and refitting. Refer newspaper articles.
