Subject: [NZ] Do you know anyone with the surname Gosselin ?

G'Day Listers,
This is my first listing on the New Zealand List, I joined up today. I am
researching a family with the surname Gosselin, the family has it's roots in
Jersey in the Channel Islands and we have a fair bit of information about
the family on Jersey but then things start heading all over the place. The
head of the family that left Jersey was one Philippe Joshue Gosselin, his
wife was Ann Gosselin nee Gibaut, they were involved in the promotion, sale,
transport and/or breeding of Jersey Cattle from Jersey to England ,
Australia and New Zealand.
There were supposedly six children in total, three boys and three girls, I
have found records of three of the children on Jersey : ~
----------
Philip Charles Gosselin, born 14 Jan 1863, Jersey, baptised St Helier,
Jersey 26 Apr 1863.
Hannah Florence Rachel Gosselin, born 19 Sep 1864 Jersey, baptised St
Helier, Jersey 05 Feb 1865.
Walter Alfred Gosselin, born 09 Feb 1872 Jersey, baptised St Helier, Jersey
27 Mar 1872.
----------
And then things get untidy, we have slowly figured out the names of the
other two girls : ~
----------
Ada Hannah Gosselin born circa 1882, but we have no idea where she was born.
Lena Algeria H Gosselin OR Algeria Helana Gosselin born circa 1884, but we
have no idea where she was born.
----------
We cannot find the missing "boy" and we do not know his name.
We find a Walter Alfred Gosselin, in the early 1900's in Australia with the
correct parentage BUT he is the wrong age and I am beginning to suspect that
perhaps the first Walter Alfred Gosselin Died and the one we have later
records on is the "missing boy". He claimed a birthplace of Rangiora, Christ
Church, New Zealand and a birth year of circa 1874, I appreciate that a two
year difference is very little and this could just be an error, but the more
I dig into this family the more I think that the "missing boy" theory is
more likely.
The family were continually backwards and forwards between Jersey, England,
Australia and New Zealand with their "work" but finally settled mainly
around Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
A family "story" has Philippe losing a lot of cattle due to the eruption of
a volcano, but I have yet to find something to back this up. Are there or
were there any volcanoes around Rangiora/Christ Church that erupted in the
late 1800's ?
We can track a lot of the movements of Philippe, Ann, Hannah, Ada, Lena and
Walter (the Walter we have been recording may be two people) but we can find
nothing on Philip Charles Gosselin after the 1871 Channel Island Census.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards, Syd Pattison, Melbourne, Australia

The name is French / Norman and originates from a Norman / French
Christian name - probably initially spelt as "Goscelin". There are many
modern spellings including Jocelyn, Jocelin, Josselin, Josselyn,
Josline, Joslyne, Joslen, Joscelyne, Joselyn, Joslyn, Joslin, Josslin,
Josolyne, Josling, Goscelin and Gosling.

There has been a lot of research into one Jocelin family, with good
evidence tracing them back to ca 1200 (as well as an embroidered version
connecting the family to St Gilbert and Charlemagne which has recently
been disproved), however as they were mainly in Essex and (more lately -
ca 1700) Ireland there may not be a link with your family.

I have documented some of this family's history on my website at
http://family.kiwicelts.com/16_Josselyn/FT_Josselyn.php and you should
visit the Josselin Society website -
http://www.peterjoslin.btinternet.co.uk/ - who have a considerable
number of the records on the name in general on their website.

It is probable that the Norman family were from Normandy and so it is
very likely that your family went to Jersey directly from there.

Kind Regards

Hi Syd,

"I am researching a family with the surname Gosselin"

What a lovely distinct name :-)

My first thought, before I'd even finished reading your post, was to
check the NZSG CD "New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956"
(http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11), but your
surname does not appear there, so none of the family married here. Nor
are there any listed on the "New Zealand Burial Locator" (same URL),
though this is not a complete index.

Next was Archway (http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index
for Archives New Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) - and there is
just one entry which sounds rather curious

Miscellaneous papers and correspondence
Pacific Islands - Confidential letter from Mr Gosselin to the Marquess
of Salisbury re Pacific Islands. 26 June 1897 Rt. Hon. Richard John
Seddon [Record Group]
Agency: SEDDON, Series: 2, Box/Item: 13a

Seddon is a former Prime Minister of NZ.

Files at Archives can be viewed in person at the office holding the file
for free (what an excuse for an overseas holiday ), or you could ask
here on the list for someone to visit the Wellington office for you, or
you can request a copy to be sent to you for a charge. There is
information on the Archives web site about this.

"A family "story" has Philippe losing a lot of cattle due to the
eruption of a volcano, but I have yet to find something to back this up.
Are there or were there any volcanoes around Rangiora/Christ Church that
erupted in the late 1800's ?"

Not in the Canterbury area that I'm aware of (I don't know of any
volcanoes in the South Island although there is geothermal activity in
parts, but that's not to say there aren't/weren't any), but Tarawera
near Rotorua in the North Island erupted in 1886 causing major damage in
the area. See
http://www.teara.govt.nz/NewZealanders/MaoriNewZealanders/TeArawa/5/en
for some background.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

From: "S.R & K.M.Pattison"
Subject: [CI] Does anyone know what happened to Philip Charles Gosselin ?
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2007 08:03:55 +1100

Does anyone know what happened to Philip Charles Gosselin ?, Philip was born
at 4.30 am, 14 Jan 1863, Patriotic Street, St Helier, the son of Philip
Josue Gosselin (a sailor) and Ann Gibaut. He was baptised 26 Apr 1863, in St
Helier by J.Stainforth, the Godparents were Charles Carter Mollet and Mary
Durrel.

In the 1871 Census Philip can be found aged 8, at 24 Cannon Street, St
Helier, with his sister Hannah aged 8, their parents, Philip, aged 31, a
Publican & Seaman, born Grouville, and Ann, aged 30, born St Mary. Also
living with them are Philip Senior's brother-in-law and sister-in-law,
George Laverty, aged 26, a Seman, born St Clement and Jane Laverty (nee
Gibaut), aged 24, born St Mary.

None of this Gosselin familiy appear in the 1881 Census.

In 1883 Hannah Gosselin is getting married in New South Wales, Australia,
and I have been able to track and find her descendants in Australia.

In 1900 Walter Alfred Gosselin, born and baptised in 1872 in St Helier, the
younger brother of Philip Charles Gosselin and Hannah Gosselin is getting
married in South Shields, England, and I have been able to track and find
his descendants, mostly in Australia.

In 1917 Philip Joshue Gosselin dies in Petersham, New South Wales,
Australia.

In 1927 Ann Gosselin, Philip's widow dies in Petersham, New South Wales,
Australia.

There were, I have been told at least 2 younger siblings (? Ada and Lena ?)
to Philip, Hannah and Walter but I have not been able to find any trace of
their existence.

But what happened to Philip Charles Gosselin ?

Any advice appreciated.
