Territt, Ann - 1814, Broxbornebury - from Gloucestershire 1810
A number of LDS searches shows an Ann Territt being born in the Sydney Colony around 1799. However, a list of the convict ships and their 'passengers' shows an Ann Territt on the ship BROXBORNEBURY arriving in 1814. Searches for Territt in the Gloucester area shows a number of Hannahs, who could either BE or be related...

Data from Desiree Pettit - 13 Jun 2007
I don't have a whole lot in terms of her family (parents etc - although there are a few possibilities, there is nothing concrete) but have a couple of documents regarding her life in Australia.
She was born in or around Gloucester, and was sentenced at the Gloucester Quarter Sessions for larceny. She was sent to Australia on a 7 year sentence aboard the 'Emu', which was hijacked by an American privateer ship, 'Holkar', and the crew and 49 female convicts dumped on the Cape Verde Islands in the Caribbean.
They were picked up, taken back to England, and then Ann was re-sent to Sydney on the 'Broxbornebury'. She worked at the female factory in Parramatta until given leave to marry (William MAKEPEACE - he's my direct ancestor, as is their son, John). She was given her freedom and after William's death, she was listed as the publican of the 'Black Swan Hotel' in Sydney.
I have few other details but can't remember off the top of my head... a lot of the info I have came from a fellow researcher and unfortunately much of it was unsourced, but several pieces can be verified with various documents.
I wont have a chance to send anything further until probably tomorrow night.
Cheers
Desiree

Uncited reference:
Tried before the Gloucester Quarter Sessions in 1810, charged with larceny. At that time, Ann had been a servant. She received a seven year term and was kept in prison for another two years prior to her transportation. Ann was first sent to NSW in 1812 aboard 'Emu' with about 40 female convicts on board. The ship was hijacked by American privateers and the passengers and crew were put onto the Cape Verde Islands until they were picked up and returned to England.
Ann was next sent aboard 'Broxbornebury' which left England on February 22, 1814.
Ann was sent to the Female Factory at Paramatta and one year later was given permission to marry William MAKEPEACE. In February 1821, Ann received her freedom. After William's death, Ann was listed as the publican of the 'Black Swan Hotel' in Sydney. Ann next married John WHEELER, a convict who had been assigned to work for Ann in 1826.
__________
The Capture of the 'Emu'
In 1812, the 'Emu', the only convict ship lost by enemy action was capture by the New York privateer, 'Holkar'. The 'Emu', which had been purchased expressly for the colonial service, was an armed brig mounting ten guns and fitted with a patent defence surmounting her bulwarks, composed of spring bayonets, to prevent boarding.
She was commanded by Lieutenant Alexander BISSETT, RN and carried of crew of 22. Having embarked her women convicts, the 'Emu' sailed from England to Hobard with the 'James Hay' on November 11, 1812. The two vessels soon parted company, and the 'Emu' was alone when she encountered the 'Holkar' on November 30. The American privateer, an 19 gun brig manned by 150 men and commanded by Captain J ROWLAND, was built on fine lines, thin planked by prodigious of mast and spar.
BISSETT realised that he had no chance of escape; for the sturdily built 'Emu' was both outgunned and outsailed. If he seriously contemplated trying to disable the 'Holkar' aloft, so as to attempt his escape, his crew's desertion speedily put an end to the plan. Only a gunner and a landsman stood by him, the rest of the crew refused to fight.
BISSETT, after throwing overboard his despatches and the ship's papers, had no alternative but to surrender. When the Americans boarded their prize, they found that she was carrying a great quantity of ammunition and had forty-nine women convicts aboard. On January 17, 1813, BISSETT and the women convicts were landed on the island of St Vincent, one of the Cape Verde Islands. The fate of the prisoners is not recorded. The 'Emu' however, was sent to New York by the 'Holkar' and presumable was sold there as a prize.
