“The parish of Henlow, Bedfordshire, was home to the Mayflower families of Samson, Cooper, and Tilley. These families, too, owned some property and were taxed. Robert Tilley, husbandman, the father of Mayflower passengers John and Edward Tilley, was taxed quite a few times in Henlow, on goods valued at £3. He was taxed 3 shillings in 1582, 1586, and 1597; and he was taxxed 8 shillings in 1594, 1598, and 1600.” 525

“The English origins of Mayflower passengers John and Edward Tilley, their respective wives Joan Hurst and agnes Cooper, along with Henry Samson and Humility Cooper, were thoroughly examined by Robert Leigh Ward in a series of articles from the 1970s that ran in The American Genealogist and The Genealogist. He shows that the Samson, Tilley, Hurst, and Cooper families originated from Henlow, co. Bedford, England. The families were well-represented there and several of the lineages even trace as far back as Wido de Reinbudcourt, the Doomsday Lord of Chipping Warden, born in the early eleventh century. Ward’s groundbreaking discoveries came primarily from analysis of the probate and parish register records in the parishes of Arlesey and Henlow. It recently occurred to me, however, that a significant source of Henlow records has been heretofore overlooked: manorial records. The parish of Henlow, Bedfordshire, contained a manor called Henlow Grey. A manor was basically the administrative unit of a landed estate and typically consisted, more or less, or the lands within a given parish. Within the estate, numerous activities took place. Rents were paid, leases were bought and sold, services were performed for the lord, frankpledges were organized and maintained, and court sessions were held to adjudicate various misdemeanors and review property transactions. These activities were recorded in what are known today as manorial records, typically written on rolls of parchment, and - at least for the time periods we are interested in - often in Latin. It turns out that the Cooper, Tilley, and Hurst families are referenced regularly throughout the manorial records of Henlow Grey. This article is an attempt to summarize and make sense of these records.” 516

“Robert Tilley was the father of Mayflower passengers John and Edward Tilley. He was born probably about 1540, married a woman named elizabeth about 1570, and was buried at Henlow on 21 February 1612/3. In 1588, Robert Tilley was executor to the will of William Ellborne, and he as also an overseer and witness of a 1579 will of William Ward.
From the manorial records of Henlow, we can gather a few more tidbits. Robert Tilley first appears in the records in 1585, when he was listed as one of the homage jurors on 15 April 1585. At that manorial court session, he, along with Edmund Cooper, helped pass along a transfer of property belonging to Elizabeth Swinbourne, called ‘Le abbi howe’ and eight acres of land. She had requested the property be surrendered to Simon and Robert Cross, upon her death.” 516

“The court session of 1585 also issued another resolution, namely that ‘none shall put their beasts or cattle in the fields where the horses do usually go, [un]til such time as John Ravens, John Rush, Edmund Cooper, James Master, John Clark, and Robert Tilley,’ with the penalty being 10 shillings per offense. John Tilley, and Edmund Cooper (who will be discussed in detail next) is the father of Mayflower passenger Agnes, wife of Edward Tilley, and the grandfather of Mayflower passengers Henry Samson and Humility Cooper.
Robert Tilley appears next as a homage juror at the view of the frank pledges that occurred on 29 April 1587, 14 December 1587, 19 January 1587/8, and 1 March 1587/8. These sessions dealt primarily with lands belonging to Henry Hurst, probably grandfather of Mayflower passenger Joan (Hurst) Tilley, who will be discussed in more detail later. [Signatures of Edward Cooper & Robert Tilley on Henlow Grey manorial record BRO L26/698, acknowledging a land transaction between Henry Hurst and Thomas Page. “In October 1596, Robert Tilley is again enumerated as a homage juror, and he received a fine (payment) from Richard Ravens of £4 10s, who wanted to be admitted to the manor: but his admission was deferred until the next court because Richard could not be present at the court session.” 516

“Robert Tilley’s last appearance in the manorial records is on a rental roll for the manor of Henlow Grey, dated 18 December 1598. He is listed as a copy-holder, meaning he retained a copy of the court roll recording his admission to the manor, and his rent was 9s, 6d, payable twice a year (on Michaelmas Day, September 29; and Lady’s Day, March 25). “ 516

“The manorial records of Henlow Grey provide an interesting glimpse into the Cooper, Tilley, and Hurst families. From these records, the Coopers - especially Edmund Cooper - appear to be the most prominent tenant of the manor, with the largest landholdings and the largest rents. The Hurst family is perhaps a distant send, and the Tilleys are right up there as well. Unlike most Mayflower passengers, these families had significant lands, social status, and inheritances.” 516

“In Robert Tilley’s will, dated 31 December 1612 and proved 6 April 1612 [sic 1613], he mentions ‘my free house wherein I dwell, with the back side, orchards, and garden, with the appurtenances thereunto belonging with a little stripe or plat of ground, whereon sometimes did stand a barn, which William Tilley purchased of one Richard Huckle as by a deed thereof made between them appeareth.’ He bequeathed this land to son John Tilley, upon the death of his widow Elizabeth ‘my now wife’ (suggesting she was not the mother of his children), on the condition that John paid his brother Edward Tilley ‘the sum of thirty pounds lawful English money.’ If he did not, then Edward was to receive the house and property.” 516
