Text: A year later the remaining members of the Measom family sailed from Liverpool on September 7, 1870 on the ship “Idaho.” On the shipping register Thomas Measom listed his age as 43 years old and Sarah’s age as 41 years old. Their children Charles, Agnes, Rosetta, Phyllis, Henrietta, and baby Thomas sailed with them. They paid cash for the tickets. There were 186 saints on board and Elder Frank H. Hyde was in charge.
They too had an experience with stormy seas. After leaving England a severe storm arose and lashed at the vessel until it seemed as though the ship would sing. It would go down into the trough of the sea while those mountainous waves would dash over the deck of the ship. Thomas said, “We will never get to see America.” Sarah replied, “Of course we shall, where is your faith? There are too many saints aboard for this ship to sink.” The saints knelt and prayed for their safety. The terrible storm abated and the ship landed safely in New York Habor on September 21, 1870. The Measoms disembarked, thankful for God’s mercy.
From New York they traveled by rail and arrived at Ogden, Utah October 1, 1870. More than likely someone met them at the railroad station with a team and wagon and they began the three day journey to their destination of Spanish Fork, Utah.
