James Singleton and Mary Green/Murray nee Rose: James arrived in Australia in 1809 aboard the ‘Aeolus’. He was a landholder and a Miller. James and brother Benjamin built excellent water-mills, the first at Kurrajong, where they ground wheat for the government stores, a second at Lower Portland Head and a third on James's fifty-acre (20 ha) grant at the Hawkesbury, known as Singleton’s Mill and it was here that Mary died on 25.01.1838. James and Mary settled at the Lower Hawkesbury although their four sons were born at Wilberforce.

September 1820 ‎(Age 43) ‎: Mill owner Kurrajong, Hawkesbury, New South Wales, Australia. James was recorded as the proprietor, along with his brother Benjamin of mills at both Kurrajong and the Lower. He is recorded as a miller at Dillon's Creek in 1825. He established a water mill on Mill Creek in either 1833 or 1834.
2010: Singletons Retreat - is located on the Hawkesbury River approximately 16km downriver from Wiseman's Ferry on the Sydney side of Centry Box Reach - a 90 minute drive from Sydney's G.P.O. The Cottage was built in about 1865 on one of the first settled properties in this part of the Hawkesbury River. It was originally owned by James Singleton who, with his brother Benjamin Singleton operated the biggest tidal mill from the 1830's onwards. Singletons Mill supplied flour grown from the local area which was taken by sail ship to the colony at Sydney Cove.
