Francis Henry Finch born 1849 Ross St Parramatta and Mary Ann Finch born 1852 Ross St Parramatta were brother and sister and children of Francis Finch born Norwich Norfolk 1813 who was transported 1835 for stealing.
Francis 1813 had only just married (to Sarah Holmes) when he was convicted (He died 1863 at Fennel St Parramatta).
In respect to this he took a common law wife (Mary Clarke) about 1841 and she remained so until she died in 1912 at Kirby St Rydalmere with her son Francis born 1849.
Francis left everything to Mary Clarke in his will. He was a 'whitesmith' in Norwich and after his ticket of freedom he took up as a blacksmith at Collett Park Victoria & Kissing Point Roads, Parramatta East and apparently did reasonably well.

BENJAMIN SINGLETON (1788 -1853) Benjamin SINGLETON was born in London on the 7th of August 1788. When his father was transported for 'unauthorised removal', he along with his younger brother Joseph and his mother accompanied the father as free settlers arriving in Sydney in February 1792. With his brother James, he built water powered flour mills at Kurrajong in 1817/18. Also in 1817 and 1818 he was involved with others in exploring for a route to the Hunter Valley. Then during 1820 he was a member of the expedition to the Hunter Valley led by John HOWE the Chief Constable of Windsor which was the first recorded European trip into the Singleton, NSW area. In June 1820 he is recorded as a miller at Kurrajong and later in September he is recorded along with his brother James as the proprietor of mills at both Kurrajong and on the Lower Hawkesbury. In 1821 he received a grant of 97.2 hectares of land near the ford crossing the Hunter River in recognition of his contribution to the exploration party and had settled there with his family by 1823 when he was appointed District Constable. His residence became the core of the town of Singleton and over the years he contributed much to the economy. He had apparently erected a mill at the future Singleton townsite or nearby in 1829 and operated what may be the same mill there from 1830 to 1835. Benjamin subdivided off part of this property as the town of Singleton in 1836. Other ventures included erecting an inn, a brewery and a courthouse. The depression of the 1840's caused his insolvency and he died on the 2nd or 3rd of May 1853 at Singleton.

Benjamin's Story
Benjamin was born in London on the 7t of august, 1788, and was transported to New South Wales with his father, mother and brother Joseph. They arrived in Sydney on the 14th of February 1792. Benjamin embarked on many projects during his life. He was a miller, explorer, pioneer, inn-keeper, constable, boat builder, grazier and founder of the town, Singleton.
Benjamin married mary lane sherland in February 1811. he raised a family of 10 children with his wife of 42 years: elizabeth, Hannah (named after Benjamin's mother), William (named after Benjamin's father), Benjamin, mary, sarah, john, Emma, Louisa, and George.
Benjamin built his first water-mill near Kurrajong where he and his brother James ground wheat for government stores. A second water-mill was built at Lower Portland head, and a third on James' 50-acre grant at the Hawkesbury.
Benjamin was an ambitious man, wanting to find a route from the Hawkesbury northward. Firstly, he accompanied William Parr in 1817 on an exploration to find a passage. However he returned home but realised the advantages of discovering a trafficable rout to the Hunter Valley. He led his own private expedition in 1818. Benjamin's expedition withdrew, although his experiences did prove helpful to John Howe's exploration which Benjamin joined in 1820. They trekked through the present day Bulga road, and came to look down upon the Hunter river and land they named St Patrick's Plains, due to the closeness of St Patrick's Day.
The Settlement of Singleton
In December 1821, Benjamin advertised in the Sydney Gazette that he would take charge of any person's cattle at St Patrick's Plains for the price of 10 shillings per head per annum. Mary Singleton, along with Mrs Phillip Thorley, crossed the rugged Bulga Track to make St Patrick's Plains their home in 1822. They were the first white women to cross the track and Benjamin's son John is believed to be the first white child born at Patrick's Plains (1823).
By 1823 a steady stream of settlers began to arrive in the district and in February, Morisset visited the area and reported to have found as much regularity as could be expected in a distant settlement and as security appointed Benjamin Singleton as district constable.
Benjamin built a residence near the Hunter river on his 200 acre grant of land which became the core of the town of Singleton. In 1827, Benjamin established the first Inn in the District, The Barley Mow, as well as a punt service across the river. The ford becxam a favorite river crossing for thos heading norht. In 1829, Benjamin opened a flour mill on the riverbank, and established a post office at his Inn.
By the late 1830s, Singleton had become a town. Benjamin had built roads and sold a number of town allotments. Benjamin donated land in 1837, now known as Burdekin Park, for a Market Square and a courthouse was erected at the site in 1841. A lock-up was also built at Burdekin Park. Unfortunately, in the late 1870s, the court house was demolished. The cells of the lockup still stand, and can be seen at the Historical Museum.
The depression of the 1840s led Benjamin, along with hundreds of others, to be insolvent, but this did not prevent him from making the first gifts of land to the Anglican and Presbyterian churches in Singleton. Benjamin was declared bankrupt in 1842 and passed away in early May 1853. Benjamin was laid to rest in Whittingham cemetery

Benjamin Singleton and Mary Jane/Lane Sharling: Mary was born on 28.12.1796 at sea onboard the ‘Bisques’ on route to Australia, Bay of Biscay. Mary continued to live in Singleton after Benjamin died until around 1874 when she moved to live with her daughter in West Maitland where she died on 05.08.1877 Reg no: 6448/1877 District: East Maitland - a mother of 10 and grandmother of nearly 70. Her remains were brought from Maitland and interred in Whittingham CofE Cemetery on 06.08.1877. Mary was known to help anyone who needed assistance. Mary’s parents were Thomas Sharling and Lucy Lane who married 18.01.1796. Thomas was of the 102nd Regiment and married on 07.02.1811. Lucy died on 01.09.1845 in Singleton.
Benjamin Singleton was an explorer who founded the town of Singleton. The town of Singleton was named after Benjamin Singleton who was a key figure in the establishment and development of the town. Benjamin was a settler and a miller. In 1827 Benjamin Singleton established the first inn in the area, called The Barley Mow, which was followed by the establishment of a flour mill in 1829 and a post office. Other ventures included a brewery and a courthouse.
Benjamin accompanied William Parr on part of his exploration of the present Bulga Road in October 1817 but, realizing the advantages to be gained by discovering a trafficable route to the Hunter valley, he withdrew and led a private expedition in April 1818. This, like Parr's, was a failure, but the experience proved useful when two years later as a member of John Howe's party, he finally reached Patrick's Plains. The town of Singleton is built on part of Singleton's 200 acres (81 ha), granted on 31 March 1821 as a reward for his share in this successful expedition.
Cattle on agistment from the Hawkesbury were soon grazing 'at Singleton's' and in February 1823 Major James Morisset appointed him district constable, on the recommendation of Edward Close who thought Singleton 'a very trustworthy man'. In the same year he fell foul of James Mudie, who refused to accept his instructions concerning the employment of convicts on Sundays and their attendance at musters. Singleton appealed successfully to Close, the nearest magistrate, to uphold his authority 'or else the District will be no better than bushrangers'. In 1825 his application for additional land, granted in 1828, was supported by the four major landholders of the district.
Farming he found 'but a poor employment'. He was grazing stock on Liverpool Plains in 1827, his mill and inn at Singleton being managed by relatives. With his brother Joseph he built a water-mill at Boatfalls, near Clarencetown, in 1831 and then embarked on a new venture. He commissioned from William Lowe's yard at Clarencetown a horse-drawn vessel, aptly named the Experiment, to be used in the Parramatta trade. Neither horses nor passengers took kindly to the novelty, and in December 1832 he offered it for sale 'for want of funds to propel her by steam'. Want of funds also forced the subdivision, sale or mortgage of much of his property during the 1830s and his insolvency in 1842, but did not prevent him making the first gifts of land to the Anglican and Presbyterian churches in Singleton. His unique contribution to education was to plough a furrow from the town to the schoolhouse at Whittingham, so that the children would not lose their way.
Adventurous, energetic and trustworthy, he retained the affectionate regard of his friends and well deserved Mudie's unconscious tribute - 'Singleton is on a perfect footing of equality with his convict servants, mine or any he comes in contact with … in a word Ben Singleton (as they call him) is a fine fellow'.
