Text: Trooper H. F. Miller, of the Second New South Wales Mounted Rifles, writes to Mr Geo. Hall from Klerksdorp, in the Transvaal, as follows:- We have a good deal of hardship to contend with here, and the life is very dreary and monotonous. It is not so bad, however, as when we first went on to the veldt. We started in the depth of winter, and I never before experienced such intense cold as that we experienced on our first trek. We had no tents for shelter from the wind, which blew with frightful persistency every night, and in consequence we had to lie shivering under two miserable blankets from sunset to reville. Sometimes we were not lucky enough to turn in at night, rarely getting more than one night in two, the alternate night finding us on outpost duty. Firewood is very scarce about the South-western Transvaal, and you can very seldom get enough to boil a billy. It is six months today since we landed in South Africa, but the time passes so quickly that it seems only like six weeks. A good many of the men are grumbling, but these are the class how cannot put up with hardships. Writing on October 30 to his mother, Mrs E. T. Williams, of Merewether, Trooper Miller says: - We went into camp at Klerksdorp for a fortnight, but at 3 am on the morning of the 23rd were called out and ordered to entrain. It has been raining all night and the water was running six inches deep over the tent floors. We started in the dark, wet through, and rode through the pouring rain to the town where we had to wait two hours for the train. We made the journey in open trucks and reached Pretoria at 3am the following day, eventually camping on the battle field of Diamond Hill. There we learned that Colonel Thomson’s column had been driven in twice by Viljoen, who was in great force at Waggon Drift. We started out in pursuit, catching up with Colonel Thompson’s column 8 miles out, where we left our convoy and arrived at Waggon Drift at daylight the next morning. There we came in touch with the enemy, and after a considerable chase, killed two, wounded three and captured 15, nearly all of them being Free State Artillerymen. In their hurry to escape the Boers had left their belongings, which we burned and then rode back to Colonel Thompson’s column.
