Text: Around 1839 or 1840, a young lady named Sarah Hill moved into the village of Burton Overy from the West Indies [means the sub-continent of India]. Her father, James Bird Hill, had died there while in the British army. Now she, her mother Ann, her sister and her two brothers had moved to Burton Overy to live with her paternal grandparents.

Text: Sometime within the first few years of their marriage, Thomas was baptized to become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don’t have a confirmation date, but it was a few years before Sarah was baptized on December 16, 1854 in the Burton Overy Branch, Leicester Conference, British Mission. For over 15 years their home was used as a meeting place by the members of the LDS church in Burton Overy. They missionaries were always welcome there.

Text: James Measom, Thomas’ father, was a farm laborer. He was noted for draining some land to reclaim it. He and Thomas even purchased a mud and thatch cottage from the Earl of Stamford for five pounds each. There weren’t many property owners at that time, and owning property entitled them to vote. When Thomas bought the house he said, “Sarah, this will take us to America,” which it did (apparently, the sale of the home helped them have enough money to by tickets to sail).
Thomas was a farm laborer. One day he injured his back while washing sheep, and from that time on he was unable to do hard work. He owned a pony and a cart which he used much like a delivery wagon was used in America.
Sarah did knitting and sewing for hire, and Thomas went into the rag and bone business. They worked very hard. They owned a few rods of land on which they raised a fine garden each year. They also kept bees.
Event source: S81Page: Measom, Thomas page Measom Family travel to Spanish Fork Utah
Text: A year later the remaining members of the Measom family sailed from Liverpool on September 7, 1870 on the ship “Idaho.” On the shipping register Thomas Measom listed his age as 43 years old and Sarah’s age as 41 years old. Their children Charles, Agnes, Rosetta, Phyllis, Henrietta, and baby Thomas sailed with them. They paid cash for the tickets. There were 186 saints on board and Elder Frank H. Hyde was in charge.
They too had an experience with stormy seas. After leaving England a severe storm arose and lashed at the vessel until it seemed as though the ship would sing. It would go down into the trough of the sea while those mountainous waves would dash over the deck of the ship. Thomas said, “We will never get to see America.” Sarah replied, “Of course we shall, where is your faith? There are too many saints aboard for this ship to sink.” The saints knelt and prayed for their safety. The terrible storm abated and the ship landed safely in New York Habor on September 21, 1870. The Measoms disembarked, thankful for God’s mercy.
From New York they traveled by rail and arrived at Ogden, Utah October 1, 1870. More than likely someone met them at the railroad station with a team and wagon and they began the three day journey to their destination of Spanish Fork, Utah.
