Hello
I'm new to the list and would be interested to know if any of you have
researched ELIZA CALLANAN (CALANAN) who arrived from Cork in 1831 aboard
the PALAMBAM.
I wonder if she spent time at PARRAMATTA FACTORY? She is listed on
Jenny Fawcett's List of "Assigned Female Convicts" July 1832 New South
Wales.
According to her Ticket of Leave she was born in 1813 in Dublin. My
husband's gggrandmother was Eliza Callanan who married Thomas Chilvers
at St Andrews Presbyterian church in Sydney by banns on 14 May 1838.
Their daughter, Elizabeth Chilvers married Henry Penglase (various
spellings) in 1856.
ELIZA CALLANAN (convict) was transported for seven years, and received
her Certificate of Freedom in 1837. If she married in 1838 this would
explain the absence of any reference to her having been a convict on the
Marriage record?
I appreciate any information you are able to offer.

With some help from Janice I have managed to find HENRY PENGLAZE of
Stockton "jumped ship" in Newcastle in 1855 and married Elizabeth
Penglaze in 1856.
Elizabeth was born in Sydney father THOMAS CHILVERS and mother ELIZA
CALLANAN. Eliza died Stockton in 1861 age 41 years and Thomas died
Stockton 1896 - I've ordered the transcripts so hopefully there will be
some more information.
THOMAS CHILVERS married ELIZA CALLANAN at St Andrews Presbyterian Church
Sydney on 14 May 1833 by banns. I've found a convict ELIZA CALLANAN who
arrived aboard 'PALAMBAM' from Dublin in 1831 sentenced to 7 years for
"stealing ribbon". She received her Certificate of Freedom in 1837 so
this would explain no reference to being a convict on the marriage
certificate if she married Thomas Chilvers in 1838.
At this stage I haven't discovered how THOMAS CHILVERS arrived in the
Colony and would love to confirm if my ELIZA CALLANAN was the Irish
convict. If any of the listeners have researched this family I would
love to hear from you.
