About the year 1770 a child was born in London of unknown parents. He was placed in an orphanage. When he was old enough, he was apprenticed to a shoemaker named "Measom". When he had finished his training he walked 91 miles to Burton Overy where he started a cobbler shop. He married a girl names Sara. It was said they had seven sons and one daughter, but proof of only five sons has been found and one daughter, her name was Ann. The sons were: George, Charles, James, Samuel, and William

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LIFE OF WILLIAM MEASOM1
Born: About 1772
Died: December 25, 1864
William Measom was born about 1772 at Spratton, Northampshire, England. He was placed in an orphanage. When he was old enough he was apprenticed as a cordwainer (shoemaker) in London. The boy had been called William and he adopted the name of his employer which was Measom. When he finished his training he walked 91 miles to Burton Overy, Leicester, England seeking work.
Shoes were all hand sewn (riveted shoes were later invented by Thomas Crick of Great Glen, a nearby village). William asked a road mender if there was any work in the village and was told the town cobbler was ill. He obtained work in the cobbler shop and later when the cobbler died William took over the shop.
He met Sarah Simpson, born December 27, 1771 at Kibworth, Leicestershire, England. They were married April 21 1794 at Kibworth, Leicestershire, England. They lived at Burton Overy where William worked at his trade. They had nine sons and the last born was a daughter who died when she was five years old.
William did not belong to the Church of England. When the Minister Reverend Freddie Thorpe came to offer the services of the church and forgive William of his sins when he was dying, William refused to see him saying he would trust his soul in no man’s hands. William died Christmas day, December 25, 1864 of old age at Burton Overy, Billesdon, Leicester, England, at the age of 92 years (He died in the sub-district of Billesdon). Ann Hill was in attendance.
Sarah Measom died August 9, 1849 at Burton Overy, Leicestershire, England.
