History - Henry Heber Arnold was born to Henry Arnold and Elizabeth Green in Fort Herriman, Utah, on November 21, 1857. He resided in Fort Herriman until he was 9 years old when he moved with his parents to Salt Lake City. He received his education at Lucius Peck School and the University of Deseret. On May 22, 1879, he married Vilate Smith in the Salt Lake Endowment House, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with pioneer Church leader Daniel H. Wells officiating. When they moved into their home at 640 Wall Street upon their marriage, part of the wall encircling the city, built mainly for the purpose of protection from Indians, was still standing. They lived in this house until Vilate died in 1945, at which time Henry moved to a care facility at 932 E. South Temple, where he died October 20, 1950.

Newspaper articles published upon their 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries, as well as Henry's obituaries, describe a rather complex work and public service history. He became a member of the Salt Lake City Volunteer Firemen Pioneer Engineer Co. No. 1 in 1873. He served for 25 years, until the Salt Lake City Fire Department was organized. From 1882 to 1890, Mr. Arnold was a member of the city police force and had served as conductor on the Salt Lake Streetcar Lines, deputy street supervisor, and worked with his father at the Globe Bakery. From 1890 until retirement in 1932, he was affiliated with the Utah Light and Traction Company/Utah Power and Light, Co. He served on the Salt Lake City Council from 1902 to 1904.
