Shipbrokers is a generic term for ship owner's representative in a port.

Shipping agent is a middleman that handles the necessary steps to a vessel port stay to work in practice. This may mean setting up contact with stevedoring companies, freight forwarders, suppliers, passport police, and port and customs authorities.

Within the ship agency are a number of different directions:

- mediate contact between the cargo owners and shippers.
- Port Agent: handles practical and technical matters for a ship to a port.
- Buying and selling broker acting as intermediary in the purchase, sale and scrapping of vessels.
- Line Agent: arrange cargo bookings for contract carriers and mediates contact with shippers.

In Sweden is Swedish Shipbrokers Association trade organization in the field.
