Victorian London - Charities - Scottish Hospital
SCOTTISH HOSPITAL and CORPORATION, CRANE COURT, FLEET STREET, for the relief of poor mechanics, &c., native sof Scotland, resident in London or its immediate neighbourhood, and for furnishing means to carry them back to their own country .... a donation of ten guineas and upwards constituting a governor for life, and a subscription of one guinea or more an annual governor, so long as such subscription should continue to be paid. The necessity of contributing, as a title to admission, was dispensed with, and the corporation thus became completely a charitable institution for the relief of poor natives of Scotland, who might be reduced to poverty and want. The number of applications is about 300 monthly.

He and his 2nd wife are merely visitors at this address. His occupation is clearly shown as "Duke of Montrose's Factor" - so he presumably took over from his father Stewart who held the office of Chamberlain to the Duke.
