The online records, & Rookwood office confirmed JJM & Annie 569, Harald & Ethel 570 & Norman & Vivien 571. I knew is was 3 x double plots with a monument for JJM & Annie. No monuments for the others (on the files) so your photos were quite a surprise in that sense, that memorials for the other 4 people had been incorporated into the monument.

Note    N1181         Index
He was born in 1815 in Hampshire to William Henry Worrad senior and Mary Worrad (nee Smith). He was an only child. He was a farm labourer and shepherd's groom. He was tried at Surrey Assizes on 25 March 1833 for stealing a horse and was sentenced to transportation for life. (This information comes from the convict indents). He was described as being 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall, with dark, sallow complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. He had a scar on the ball of his right thumb. He was a protestant, he could read and write. Stealing the horse was his first offence. He was transported on the Aurora 1 (1) on 4 July 1833, arriving in Sydney on 3 November 1833.

The story about his mother being married to Squire Brown I'm not sure of. One of our relatives, Marjorie Bertoli, did extensive research on William Henry Worrad in the early 1980s. I have copies of letters she wrote to my father, Jack Worrad, which detail her findings. I would be happy to pass copies on to you. While Marjorie did a wonderful job of researching the family history, I'm not sure where she got the Squire Brown lead from (I should go back to her letters and have a look, I suppose). I'm not sure when William Henry Worrad senior died or when Mary remarried. It would be interesting to find out.

I do know that Marjorie did not discover that William Henry Worrad was a convict. There are a few of reasons for this. Firstly, family folk-lore had it that William Henry Worrad was invited to NSW by John Macarthur to help him with his sheep. No-one thought to question that, although it's absolutely false. For a start, Macarthur did not run sheep in the Scone area, where William Henry was assigned, and neither did his sons, James or William (that info comes from the ADA). The other thing is that whenever Marjorie visited the archives and tried to find out which ship William Henry came out on, the moving reels would make her feel 'sea-sick' and she'd have to leave. I know how that feels, the same thing used to happen to me all the time at the archives. Then, of course, there's the spelling of the Worrad name.

William Henry Worrad was listed as Henry Worad in convict indents. His prisoner number was 33/2862. He was assigned to a Captain Thomas Clarke at Cassilis. He was given his ticket of leave on 10 January 1842. I have a copy of the ticket of leave and will gladly give you a copy. He married Ellen Edwards that same year. Courtesy of Judy Ford, I also have a copy of William Henry's probate notice. He died intestate in 1863 (typhoid fever). His estate, totalling 200 pounds, went to his widow, Ellen.

Ah, I'm finding all of this really exciting. I read a book recently called Australia's Birthstain, by Babette Smith (I highly recommend it). Babette talks about how many of us do not have any idea that we're descended from convicts. It got me thinking, then googling (you know how it is). Anyway, I've found six convicts in my family (three on dad's side - Bradbury, Worrad, Edwards) and three on my mum's. That's only so far. I know there are more. Babette Smith says that there has been a cover-up at private and public levels because of the shame of Australia's beginnings as a convict colony. It's only now that we're finding out the truth. In fact, convict records were only made public in the 1970s and that was because of agitation by family historians who kept coming up against brick walls.

Janice, I hope you find this helpful. I'm still searching for information about William Henry Worrad. Anything I find I will be happy to share with you. What say you, Judy Ford and I get together one of these days. Judy lives in Bondi, I live in Penrith. Where do you live?

If you'd like to email me direct, my email address is miworrad at optusnet dot com dot au.

Kindest regards

Merril
