I am seeking information on the descendants of Sarah Singleton (daughter of Benjamin Singleton and Mary Jane Sharling) and Bourn Russell. After Sarah's death in 1852, what happened to their chldren? Bourn remarried in 1856 and went to Eden as harbour master in 1860, but it seems none of the children went with him.
My interest stems from the fact that I am descended from Bourn Russell's youngest brother, Frank.

Coggins Genealogy - 2012-11-26
Joseph Tilley was born in Middlesex, England about 1834. He arrived in Adelaide SA in approx. 1849. Bridget Carrig was born in County Clare, Ireland in 1837, and came to Adelaide in approx 1854. Joseph and Bridget married on 18 November 1862 at St Patricks Cathedral in Adelaide. Apparently there were other Tilleys and Carrigs in Adelaide at the time, so they had family support.
Joseph and Bridget's first child John Joseph was born on 18 August 1863 in Adelaide. By tradition Tilley males were alternately named John or Joseph; their first child was endowed with both names. Their second child Sarah Adelaide was born on 12 January 1865. Bridget gave birth to a third child which was still-born, and on 18 May 1866 she also died in Adelaide Hospital of puerperal fever after only 3 1/2 years of marriage. John Joseph was only 2 years 9 months, and Sarah was 16 months old.
It appears that the children were looked after by Sarah's godparents, Bridget's sister Anna Carrig and her fiance George Mahon, while their father Joseph worked as Cobb & Co. driver as far away as Queensland. Unfortunately Joseph started drinking heavily, and died in 1872, leaving the two children orphans.

... Topsy was always reassured by what she saw as "the Hand of God" in our ancestors' and present day trials and tribulations. Her own young life hadn't been easy, with an enforced split-up of the family unit in 1912 following the 1908 murder of her father John Joseph Tilley through being too honest over a game of billiards at the local pub in Jeparit. Her mother had managed to keep the family together for about four years until she was raped by a drunk who was himself immediately killed climbing out the window - almost an act of God The shock of all this caused Kate to have a nervous breakdown, so the well meaning," local priest and Welfare intervened and the family ceased to exist as a unit.

Notes
* Notes from RV Coggins: John Joseph Tilley and his sister Sarah Tilley (Aunt Addie) were orphaned at a very early age, their parents both dying during an epidemic. Both were adopted out to farm workers, but Aunt Addie ran away at age 10 and was taken in by a local publican's wife. Later she learned the bar trade and worked in hotels. John Joseph Tilley worked on farms and later for the council in Jeparit, Victoria. After 16 years of marriage and with 8 living children, he was killed in a fight at the local hotel - he was just 40 year of age. His wife Kate Elizabeth was left destitute with a large family, some of whom were adopted out or sent to their godparents. The Menzies family (parents of Robert Gordon Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia) were very good to them; they were neighbours and the local food store was owned by Mr and Mrs Menzies. Mrs Menzies made black dresses for Molly, Peggy and Madge (the three oldest girls) to wear to their father's funeral.
Notes from Irene Gertrude (Topsy) Tilley: John Tilley died on the evening of Feb 22 (1908)- apparently at the local (Jeparit) Hopetoun Family Hotel. He was keeping the score of a man playing Snooker, at a billiard table. On reporting M. Smith had cheated, but had denied it... when my Dad went to the toilet, he followed with a bottle - on leaving the toilet, he struck Dad on the temple, who then bled to death... the same night on the spot. Mum and 8 children were waiting at home... but he was dead.
He had brown hair blue eyes and a ginger moustache, 6ft 4 inches tall
Details of Manslaughter Inquest, held 22 and 24 February 1908, by Edward Harrison, Coroner.
