Story time...

Mary Packwood 1749-1829 had a brother, William Packwood 1763-1823. This William Packwood married Mary Binley in 1787 in Foxton and they had 11 children. Their eldest daughter, Hannah, 1789-1825 married James Read in 1816. Apparently it was not a happy marriage, and while James was away working, Hannah "took up with" Jonathan Waterfield. When James returned, they had a row and Hannah pushed him into the canal, holding him down until he drowned. She was convicted and was hanged in Leicester on 05 Aug 1825. For sure it was a sad time for all the families. Hannah's children were allowed to visit her on the evening before the hanging.

Many articles and stories have been written about this deed. I have a copy of an article taken from the Leicester Chronicle in 1825 but it is hard to read.

When James and I visited Foxton in 2003, we strolled along the banks of this canal but he made me walk on the inside nearest the water

Ironically, in 1833, Jonathan Waterfield married Hannah's eldest daughter, Ann Packwood - Hannah had two children before she married James Read.

James and Hannah had three children. Their two sons went to Australia and did quite well. Emmanuel had two wives and nineteen children: their many descendants have a reunion every year.

Let me know if either of you would like an outline tree.

Regards,

Jodie Edgar
